UMS receives Bentley System’s “Be Inspired Award”

November 2015, London – Cameron Greer and Don Haines travel to London to present UMS’ SR 510 3D Utility Survey Effort which was nominated for Bentley System’s “Be Inspired Award”–  All the survey data and utility information for this project was imported using Power Geopak.  Using Bentley’s Subsurface Utility Engineering Add-In, a 3D model was created.  The utilities depicted in the 3D model were based on utility size and material information gathered in the field and through records research.  The 3-D model allowed the various entities, departments, and members of the design and construction teams to have a common platform to review the existing utility information and identify the best route.  Team members from the various disciplines met on multiple occasions to review the 3-D model, and to develop a work plan to address the potential conflicts.  Once the final route was chosen, the final design files were submitted to WSDOT for approval.  In addition, the 3-D data were delivered to the contractors for utilization in their bid preparation and submittals. By identifying and modeling utility infrastructure during the design stage, designers were able to adjust the pipe elevation and horizontal alignment to avoid potential utility conflicts.   This reduced the costs associated with unnecessary utility relocations, avoidable construction delays, and contractor change orders.  It also allowed for tighter contractor bid estimates by providing a design which allowed for more accurate cut, fill, and bedding material calculations.
