Eric Berkowitz, Senior Engineer

Eric Berkowitz joined Utility Mapping Services in September 2016 after serving over 25 years in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Commissioned Officer Corps.

Following graduation from the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Eric joined the NOAA Corps at received his first assignment aboard NOAA Ship Whiting where he developed his skills as a hydrographer, surveyor and project manager. He completed three sea tours aboard NOAA hydrographic survey ships and one mobile field unit. He also served on NOAA Ship Mt. Mitchell during their deployment to Persian Gulf following the first Gulf War.

After spending ten years focused on hydrographic surveying, Eric was selected for flight training and upon completing flight training was assigned to NOAA’s National Operational Hydrologic Remote Sensing Center. He used the skills he developed as a hydrographer to expand that program’s airborne data collection of snowpack water content.

After 15 years of operational field assignments he completed several assignments at NOAA headquarters in Silver Spring, MD where he developed his skills as a leader and program manager. He was selected and served as the Director of NOAA’s Marine Operations Center in Newport, OR and was responsible for the day to day operations of NOAA’s fleet of 16 research ships and over 600 employees.

Before retiring from the NOAA Corps in 2016, he served his last assignment as the Chief of NOAA’s Hydrographic Survey Division where he guided the prioritization, planning, evaluation and management of the NOAA’s hydrographic surveys used to update NOAA’s suite of nautical charts and related products.

He is married with three children and is based in the Seattle, WA area.
